Description
This coin was issued underKing Bela III
(
1172-1196 AD
) in Kingdom of
Hungary
.
The Hungarians, led by
Arpad
, settled the
Carpathian Basin
in
895
and established the
Principality of Hungary
(896-1000).
The principality was succeeded by the Christian Kingdom with the coronation of St. Stephen on Christmas Day 1000.
The first kings of the kingdom were from the
Arpad Dynasty (1000-1301).
Bela III
was a
King of Hungary and Croatia
between 1172 - 1196. He was the
second son of King Geza II
. Around 1161,
Geza granted Bela
a Duchy,
which included Croatia, central Dalmatia and possibly Sirmium. In accordance with a peace treaty,
Bela
moved to Constantinople
in 1163. The Byzantine
Emperor Manuel I
Komnenos granted him the heir in 1165.
But the emperor
deprived Bela of his high title, granting him the inferior rank of kaisar.
Stephen III, the king of Hungary,
died in 1172
, and Bela decided to
return to Hungary
. Bela fought with his younger brother,
Geza
, whom he held in captivity for
more than a decade
. Bela
reoccupied
Croatia, Dalmatia and Sirmium in 1180-
1181.
The royal palace built in
Eszergom
during his reign was the first example of Gothic architecture in Central Europe.
Bela was one of the
most eminent
medieval monarchs of Hungary. His rule not only represented the apogee of the kingdom
of the Arpadians, but also marked the end of an epoch.
