Notes that came with this piece:
Doccia porcelain sugar pot and cover in the Etruscan (urn) shape (circa 1792). There are four scenes elegantly painted within quadrilobate frames—two on the bowl and two on the lid—depicting figures at Classical ruins and in pastoral scenes reminiscent of Italian landscapes. This type of decoration on Doccia porcelain is called “the Saxon manner” (
alla Sassone
) since it follows a similar Meissen porcelain style. Both bowl and lid have gold bands at the borders. An example of a similar covered sugar pot is illustrated in
Lucca and the Porcelain of the Ginori Manufactory
(2001) (Plate 109 described on Pages 166 (Italian) and 290 (English) and dated circa 1780. Doccia porcelain decorated
alla Sassone
is usually dated circa 1770-1790. The underside of the bowl of this example has an incised “F”—the mark used by Doccia between 1792 and 1815 to indicate wares of the finest quality (according to Arthur Lane in
Italian Porcelain
(Page 37 and Plate 53B) and to the Victoria and Albert Museum). Since this example is decorated
alla Sassone
and also has the incised “F” used from 1792, it can be dated to the early 1790s. A piece of the bowl was broken and re-stuck with minimal loss. The original lid ring handle perished and was replaced by a metal one of identical shape—probably about 200 years ago. There is a fleabite to be lid and another to the bowl at the spot of re-attachment. There is an old collector’s label numbered “82” on the inside of the lid. Height to top of handle: approx. 6” Diameter of bowl: approx. 4.375”.
