    Description

Cast by Eugene Sigle, this copper-finish metal miniature was created for the Century of Progress International Exposition, better known as the Chicago World’s Fair (1933-34). This little model is Plate 52 in Monumental Miniatures, its rarity rated II. Raised lettering around the base reads: THE ADLER / PLANETARIUM / CHICAGO; signed (c) E.S. under "Chicago". It’s weighty, the interior cavity filled with plaster; the base’s felt cover is missing. Sigle also made replicas of the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum of Natural History for the World’s Fair.
The Adler Planetarium was founded in 1930 by Chicago businessman Max Adler and opened that year in time for the World’s Fair. Designed by Ernest A. Grunsfield and built on the shores of Lake Michigan, it earned its architect the gold medal from the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1931. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
