My research suggests that this may be the only surviving copy of the 1898 Centenary re-strike. And, due to age and loss of paper, there is a critical piece of information missing ... so we have to arrive at the facts by deduction:
- Firstly, this is definitely not a modern facsimile. The age and condition of the paper indicate that it is >100 years old. This type of aging cannot be faked.
- As you see in the 3rd photo -- where a corner of the page has gone missing -- it clearly states that it was republished, with a date of "Oct..." and by "Collins & ... [possibly Co. or Sons]."
- Looking at original 1798 issues of The Times (which I believe are all in private collections), they always utilized the LONG S (
ſ
), as was the custom at that time. So, why would someone re-publish this newspaper without the LONG S?
- I believe the correct conclusion is that this was re-published for the "Irish Rebellion Centenary" in 1898 -- which was a MAJOR OBSERVANCE. Since they did not have modern photocopy technology at that time, the ENTIRE page -- both sides -- had to be re-typeset in order to re-publish it. They used moveable type, same as in 1798. The difference was that they
did not have
the LONG S anymore. (If you read the Wikipedia article on LONG S, for example, it goes to great lengths to explain that moveable typefaces with LONG S quickly disappeared from print shops after about 1800.)
- All things considered, it makes perfect sense that you are buying an October 1798 newspaper page that was re-published in October 1898 by a printer named "Collins & Co." or "Collins & Sons."
- Again, I have NOT found a record of any other copy of this Centenary re-strike. It is entirely possible that you are purchasing the only surviving copy.
- As you can see, the entire October 3 Times paper was not dedicated just to the story of the Irish Rebellion. This sheet includes page 3 of that day's paper, with page 4 on the reverse side. The Rebellion article starts on the right-hand side of page 3 (at the top) and occupies most of that side of the page. Page 4 is entirely filled with other material. The 1898 re-strike faithfully duplicates the context on
both
sides -- page 3 and page 4 -- with all the material they contained in 1798.

If the shipping cost seems a bit high, it is because this cannot be rolled or folded without risking damage to it.
It will be shipped flat, strapped to a rigid backboard, and in a double-wall box.

CONDITION...
]
- Beautiful honest antique condition
-- from a non-smoking environment
.

The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please expect that
there will be something
about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.
